What prophecies of the Bible have come true?
Can somebody list all the prophecies of the Bible that have been fulfilled to date?
Only those with good knowledge of the Bible need respond.Thanking you in advance.
According to the preterist and historicist views EVERY prophesy in the bible has come true.
According to the idealist view the prophesies are not to be taken literally so all that matters is the spiritual message.
According ot the futurist view, some prophesies have come true but some are still awaiting fulfilment.
What I am about to give you is an admittedly biased explanation of the historicist view (since this is the view I best identify with) You will no doubt get equally biased veiws from adherants to other views.
Matthew 24:34 & Matthew 16:28.
If God is not a liar we must believe that all of the propecies including the return of Christ happened in one generation. Some say the generation meant the genetic line of the people he was talking to but that’s really stretching the definition of generation. Also it doesn’t explain the following verse:
The preterist view says that all prophesies have come true and there are no more prophesies left awaiting fulfilment. God is proved right when he speaks
but we are not looking forward to Christ’s return anymore.
The futurist view is the opposite, all of the prophesies in the bible have not yet come true and futurists must wrestle with scriptures l have just mentioned as it is hard to interpret them and the interpretations do seem to be a bit of a reach
on the other hand we get to look forward to the return of Christ who will one day sort out the world’s problems
The idealist view states that all of the prophesies are symbolic ideals and we can take the spiritual lessons from the prophecies to improve our relationship with God
but there is no literal fulfilment to the prophesies
My favourite view is the historicist view, which states that all of the prophesies have already been fulfilled just as the preterists believe
but also that because history repeats itself the prophesies will be fulfilled over and over again throughout history so they are as relevant to our generation as they were to the first century church. There is nothing in the historicist viewpoint that says there will not be a literal fulfilment in the future
. In my mind the weakness of the preterist and futurist view is the assumption that prophesies has only one fulfilment.
Let me take perhaps the most famous fulfilled prophesy in scripture as an example.
Isaiah 7:14
We all know he’s talking about Mary giving birth to Jesus right?
Matthew 1:22-23
Hang on though, Isaiah was writing around the 7th century BCE (699-600 BCE) so this prophesy was fulfilled some 600 or so years after the prophesy was made. Yet the mark of a prophet is that the prophesy is fulfilled, how would the generation receiving the prophesy have known Isaiah was a prophet and not a false prophet?
Deuteronomy 18:20-22
If this prophesy had not come true within the life-time of Isaiah he would have been condemned as a false prophet and his book would never have made it into the bible.
So his prophesy was fulfilled and in the time of the hearers:
Let’s look at the prophesy in full.
Isaiah 7:5-18
The Hebrew word for virgin is harah (not a good transliteration I know but I’m unfamiliar with this editor) which can mean young woman or virgin. Whoever the young woman and child were, before the child is even old enough to know right from wrong the whole land will be under the king of Assyria:
Isaiah 8:3-4
The young woman (not a virgin) and the child of whom Isaiah spoke was probably Isaiah’s own child through the unknown prophetess.
So this prophesy had a fulfilment in Isaiah’s own lifetime, which was fulfilled when Isaiah had a son through the prophetess who was not old enough to know right from wrong by the time the Assyrians occupied the land (around 650 BCE). Yet we all know this prophesy had a more important and world changing fulfilment in the first century when a real virgin gave birth to a son who is truly deserving of the name “God with us”.
So prophesies can have multiple fulfilments and it is possible to believe as the preterists do that Jesus did indeed return to judge the world in 70CE but that he will also come back to judge the whole world at some date in the future.
If you want to know details about the fulfilment of specific prophesies ask a question relating to the specific prophesy you have in mind.
